Night Life (open)

Phil Kisch checked his watch. 9:00 PM. Two more hours, and then he'd go home.

The downtown of Tonka Bay was aglow as usual, with Phil set up with his easel in front of a bookstore. Jazz music seeped out from under the door, along with warm air, making him one cozy artist. Today had been a good day for portraits. He'd raked in quite a bit of money, considering the small size of Tonka Bay. If things went on like this, he'd be a happy man by 11.

Phil knew someone was interested in him before he even looked up - he'd heard enough of that gait to know when someone was considering a painting. "And what would you like?" he said readily, looking up with what he hoped was an amiable grin on his face.

Re: Night Life (open)

Sam Sultana didn't register what was in front of him until Mongo pulled on his leash. He looked up from his phone. There was a painting facing him, a beautiful night sky with purples and blues and great glittering gold. Another was next to it, a still life with a magnifying glass in the center illuminating the text "YOU ARE STILL BECOMING WHAT YOU WILL BE".

Mongo was still pulling on the leash. His eyes followed the line and settled on a man standing near an easel. Must be the artist.

Oh, he was talking. What was he saying?

"...what would you like?"

Sam didn't hesitate. "How much are the small ones?" he asked, gesturing to the breathtaking paintings he had first seen.

"Fifteen dollars," Phil replied, crossing his legs and readying a brush.

In a nearby Chinese take-out market, a light bulb near the back shut off. No one inside said a word, although there was an audible bang.

Re: Night Life (open)

Mongo was still pulling on the leash, but he had changed direction and was aggressively barking at a dark nearby store. Sam glanced at the building. It was old, and the paint seemed like it had been chipping for years. There seemed to be some Asian language characters  (were they Chinese? Japanese? Korean? Sam couldn't tell) scratched haphazardly onto the wooden door frame.

Sam quickly fished some bills out of his sweatshirt pocket and handed them to Phil. "Thanks," he said. "Your art is very beautiful."

Re: Night Life (open)

"Thanks!" Phil said, deciding to put extra effort into this one. It was a shame that the following events distracted him a bit.

Loud yelling in an indistinguishable language followed a shattering of glass from the market. Someone in dark clothing had jumped out the window, and behind the figure was the owner. No one seemed happy.

The dark figure bolted from the market and towards Phil and Sam.
